Doris E. Grant

Doris E. Grant, 94 passed away at the Long Term Care Center in Northfield, Thursday December 22, 2016. Dori was born August 27th, 1922 to grant-obitAustin O. Strand and Ida Strand of Dennison, MN.

An only child, Dori spent much of her time at the Family business in Dennison, Strand Motors. She attended and graduated from Northfield High School. She attended St. Olaf College three years and then a year at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Psychology and Sociology Degree. On the school bus her freshmen year she met Granville Grant. High School sweethearts, Dori and Granville R. Grant would marry on August 11th, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. As Granville was a marine in WWII, serving in Samoa and the Marshall Islands. The newlyweds moved to San Francisco where he worked in the supply depot. While in San Francisco Dori worked for the Schlage Lock company and won the honor of “Lock & Key Office Pin Up Girl”. She was described as 5’2, eyes of blue to a “T”! After the war, they returned to Dennison, MN and took the reins of Strand Motor Company, which would later be renamed Grant Ford. At the time of closing, Grant Ford was one of the oldest family run and owned dealerships in America.

To this union two sons would be born, Granville S. Grant and Steven R. Grant who would continue in the family business until it was closed in 2003.

Dori was very active in the family business, served as President of the Dennison L. Church woman’s organizations and was also on the church council and Sunday school teacher. At the time of her death Dori was the oldest member of the Dennison Lutheran Church. She served as President and other offices of the Woman’s Study Club. Active in Dennison City government Dori was a member of the City council for 11 years. Dori was also on the advisory board for the Northfield School system through the boy’s school years.

In 1981 She and her husband retired from their business and began dividing their time between their winter home in Sarasota, Florida, Dennison and their beloved Cabin on Crane Lake, MN on the Minnesota/Canadian Border. While Dori enjoyed fishing her passion was golf. Dori enjoyed golfing in Florida and MN and everywhere else she had an opportunity. She was a member of the Northfield Golf Club and the Kenyon Golf Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Austin & Ida Strand, her husband Granville Grant in 1986, two grandchildren Brandon & Jerrin (Steve & Anita) Grant, two sisters in laws and their husbands Bob & Betty Bailey, Gene & Jean Beytien. many dear friends and relatives.

She is survived by sons, Granville S. (Shirley) Englewood, FL and Northfield, Steven R. (Anita) Northfield. four Grandchildren (Gran & Shirley) Darin Grant (Michelle Hartigan), Nerstrand and Tonya (Dr. Will) Petty, Hilton Head, SC, (Steve & Anita) Alissa Claire (Kirk Haram), Rosemount, Lezlie Claire-Grant, Northfield. Four Great Grandchildren, Kayla Claspill, Rosemount, Mason & Holden Petty, Hilton Head, SC, and Logan Grant, Nerstrand.

Services were held January 5th, 2017 at the Dennison Lutheran Church, Dennison, MN at 11:00 with reviewal an hour ahead at 10:00. Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield.
