Dennison Farmers Market Celebrates 9 Years

It’s been 9 years for the Dennison Farmer’s Market and I am so excited to be a part of it. I sometimes forget how fast time goes by. Those first years were a learning curve for the group which consist of a board of 4 with a Treasure, Chairperson, Second and Administrator. I had an idea, took it to a couple of friends (Nancy & Tim) and they were on board with me. We went to the City Council and asked for permission to use the park as the meeting place for the Market. People often ask me “why Wednesday evenings” and I can honestly say I choose Wednesday’s because years ago when I worked for Gary and Suzy Wednesday night was a busy night in town. A Night at the Museum

Come and see history brought to life at the fith annual A Night at the Museum event, hosted by the Rice County Historical Society in its museum and historic outbuildings at 1814 NW Second Ave., from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7. This event will feature many costumed characters from Rice County’s past. These characters will come to life in the log cabin, the schoolhouse, Harvest and Heritage Halls and the Museum of History. There will also be flashlight tours offered in the Heritage and Harvest Halls where artifacts from early-day county businesses and farming equipment are kept. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides, food, and music around a crackling fire ring as well as a passport clue-hunt for children with prizes offered. Great fun for the whole family! Big Woods Run

An organized run through the Big Woods State Park is happening again this year! St John’s Church is once again planning the Big Woods Run, a race that takes runners through one of the best hardwood forests in southern Minnesota. Saturday, October , 2017 is the date to pull on your running or walking shoes and enjoy this scenic trek. This is the last run of the Minnesota Trail Racing Series, and the Big Woods should be in prime color for the runners and spectators. The schedule of events includes a half marathon, 10k, 5k, 1.6 mile prairie walk and a 1k kids run. The half marathon will take runners through beautiful wooded scenery with challenging hills. The End of an Era

A large crowd was on hand Tuesday August 15th for the final sale at Isaacson Implement in Nerstrand. David Isaacson and his family were on hand as the business that had become a main street destination serving large and small farmers of the area for over 70 years, completed the liquidation of the business. Started in 1944 by Manford Isaacson, the business grew over the years, and was operated by David and Penny Isaacson and their family the past 40 plus years, until the decision was made to close the business earlier this year. 156th Annual Goodhue County Fair August 8-12

The Goodhue County Fair kicks off next week with a Lawn Mower Derby on Tuesday evening at 7pm in the grandstand. Other grandstand events through the week include a Demolition derby on Wednesday at 7pm, a truck and tractor pull on Thursday at 6:30pm. Friday night features four acts at the grandstand, starting at 6:30pm with Diesel Drive, Maiden Dixie, Josh Thompson and headliner Mark Chesnutt. Saturday caps off the week with a demolition derby at 6pm. Merriam’s Midway with rides and games will be open Tuesday from 6 to 10pm, Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 11pm and Friday and Saturday from 1 to 11pm. THE KING with Cash and Diamonds

For fans young and old, if you have ever been to the popular Breezy Point Resort up north in Minnesota, you may have caught The Memories of Elvis Show ( on their dockside bar or if you have been to Dennison the past few years on Labor Day Weekend,  Chris Olson performs this entertaining tribute of The King, and will be bringing his talents and show back to DENNISON, MINNESOTA on Friday, September 1. Show time will be at 7:00p.m.  This will be a rain or shine event under the big top at the Fireside.This years show also has a new guest, bringing an additional voice to the stage,  saluting Johnny Cash and even some Neil Diamond. Moland Strawberry Festival June 25th

The Moland Strawberry Festival will be held on Sunday June 25th at the Moland Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon. The Norwegian Lutheran church dates back to 1884 and holds this event every year when the strawberries are in season. They serve pork sandwiches, strawberries, cake, ice cream and beverages from 11am until 2pm. City of Nerstrand Earns 2016 Wastewater Operations Award

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently recognized 327 Minnesota wastewater treatment facilities for maintaining outstanding permit compliance from September 2015 through September 2016. MPCA Commissioner John Linc Stine presented the certificates and praised award recipients for their persistent work and dedication to protecting water quality: “Wastewater operators are at the front lines of keeping our water clean. Every Minnesotan owes a debt to each of these professionals.” To be eligible for this recognition, facilities were required to submit all monitoring reports to the MPCA correctly and on time, demonstrate consistent compliance through monitoring or surveys, and employ staff certified by the MPCA in wastewater operations. Goodhue County residents invited to public meeting concerning emerald ash borer

Public can also weigh in on adoption of a formal quarantine of Goodhue County Residents of Goodhue County are invited to a public meeting on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 regarding the discovery of emerald ash borer (EAB) in the county. On March 2, 2017, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed EAB larvae that was discovered in an ash tree in the city of Red Wing by MDA staff. Those attending the upcoming meeting will have an opportunity to listen to presentations on EAB, hear about local options to deal with the insect, and learn how residents can limit the spread of the bug. Experts from the MDA, University of Minnesota, and other state and federal partner agencies will be available to answer questions. 2017 Flake Out Festival and Winter Parade planned for February 25

The Dennison Lions Club is planning the 2017 Flake Out Festival & Winter Parade for Saturday, February 25, 2017. The club is holding a raffle in conjunction with the days events to raise funds to support Lions Clubs activities and help support other area non-profit entities and those in need that the club donates to and supports throughout the year. Returning this year will be the poker run and Euchre at City Hall at noon. The Lions Club will be hosting a Wine & Canvas Painting event at City Hall from 3-5 pm. There will Wine and Beer available for purchase during the event along with a tasting of local and regional wines.
